Financial Stress in the UK is Worse in the North

According to recent reports by credit agency, Experian, those in Manchester and Glasgow feel under more financial pressure than Britons in other areas of the United Kingdom do. Nearly 30% of people in those regions report that they suffer from high levels of financial pressure. The Southwest or England is the UK's hottest area for bankruptcy where six out of ten towns that record the highest level of bankruptcy per head are located.

Although some of the problem lies in the fact that some of the towns rely on seasonal trade, that is not the root of the problem. After all, though the seaside town of Torquay has the highest bankruptcy rate of those surveyed, other towns such as London have a very high reliance on tourist trade and house some of the United Kingdom's most affluent. So what is the problem? Experian researchers believe that it is in the failure of people to make a budget and stick to it, a problem that exists not only in the United Kingdom but all over the world. Certain areas are just more financially stressed than others are and in the United Kingdom, that is the Southwest areas of the region.

Some of the financial stress may be related to debtors who enter into IVA's (Individual Voluntary Arrangement) to repay a portion of debt because they are confined to a very tight budget until the arrangement is complete, yet their credit record is still damaged. IVA management firms are apparently spending millions advertising on television and through other media outlets to encourage people to enter into these IVA's with the promise of decreased financial pressure. Instead of relieving the financial burden, they actual create a new burden as debtors struggle harder to repay the IVA plans than they did to repay the original debt.
