If you’ve been declined for credit and can’t understand why then it’s advisable to get a copy of your credit report that lenders are using to make their decisions, as it may contain inaccurate information about you. There are a number of credit reference agencies in the UK that you can request a copy of your report from.
Variations of your name may appear on your credit report. If you’ve never used the aliases listed to apply for credit then it’s possible someone else has fraudulently taken out credit using your details. To get this matter investigated you can either contact the lender directly or go through the credit reference agency you got the report from.
Ex-partners details could still feature on your credit report, even if you’ve not been together for years. Clearly, their borrowing behaviour could have a direct and negative impact on your credit score without you realising, especially if you’re no longer in contact with them. To rectify this you must apply to the credit reference agency for what’s known as a ‘disassociation’ and provide them with all the relevant details of the other party involved, your relationship with them and any shared addresses you held previously.
Loans, credit card and mortgage details on your credit report should be checked meticulously to ensure they are up-to-date and correct. Someone incorrectly entering data or not removing an entry after a misunderstanding has been cleared up could still be affecting your credit score so it’s important that you get in touch with the lender directly and ask them to provide the accurate information to the credit reference agencies.
The Electoral Roll may not show that you’re registered to vote even if you’re certain that you should be. In such cases, you should ask the credit reference agency to look into this for you.
You may not have registered with a new local authority to vote if you’ve recently moved house, so in this situation you should fill in an electoral registration form which you can get from your local authority offices.
Bankruptcy orders in your name that have been annulled may still appear on your credit report. In this case you should send a copy of the Annulment Certificate to the credit reference agencies so that they can update their records.
If you’ve been discharged from a bankruptcy, the agencies will need a copy of your Order of Discharge to update your credit report to reflect this change in status. Unlike an annulment, a bankruptcy discharge will still be noted on your credit report.
